Despite chalking up five albums and countless singles to their name, Ash are one of those thoroughly dependable bands who you suspect will never change direction, never tinker with the formula and most certainly never crash and burn in a spiral of rock'n'roll excess. But that's no reason not to love their almost inexhaustible supply of wistfully romantic rock songs, the latest of which is this new single, Starcrossed. Drenched in fuzzy chord progressions and tremoloing guitars, it's an overblown love song wrapped in the warm lustre of Californian rock production (thanks to producer Nick Raskulinecz, who's also worked with Foo Fighters and System Of A Down), and as usual it's all so endearing and heartfelt that you have to forgive their slightly boring dependability. Enjoy it, safe in the knowledge that there's plenty more where this came from.
