Debut by TV reality show winner. Forget Leona – think David Sneddon

Scottish singer-songwriter Tommy Reilly was still working in Tesco when he won the Orange Unsigned TV talent show and has since enjoyed hits in his native land while remaining unknown south of the border.

It’s unlikely that this state of affairs will be improved by Words On The Floor, his Bernard Butler-produced debut album which sees Reilly spill out plaintive songs about being unlucky in love that resolutely lack pop’s alchemical X factor.

He can’t be faulted for effort and produces the odd killer line (“I have to get out of my head and into yours” he proclaims on Tell Me So) but ultimately his languidly earnest strumming and so-so song nuggets fail to surprise or excite.

The politely restless, carefully tasteful single Jackets echoes the pseudo-confessional pop of David Gray but, well, is the world really crying out for a fresh infusion of David Gray-like pseudo-confessional pop? God, I hope not…

More to try:
David Gray – White Ladder
James Morrison – Songs For You, Truths For Me
James Blunt – Back To Bedlam
