Kano - Home Sweet Home

Not yet 20, Kane Robinson from east London is already an old hand on the grime scene, having cut underground favourite Boys Love Girls when he was a mere 16 year old. Having guested at raves and pirate radio stations for five years, he has finally landed with a cracking album that suggests he is a major talent. Like his UK contemporary Dizzee Rascal - and maybe even Eminem himself - Kano can twirl witty, intelligent rhymes around just the best beats and grooves around. Some of the tunes are weak, mere shadows of ghetto rap, as on Ghetto Kid, which sounds like it could have come from anywhere. Of course there is the usual self-obsession, but that's all part of the genre and must be forgiven, for here there are snatches of real innovation, such as Ps & Qs, where the boy blends hip hop, rap and electro to great effect.

He has his reflective moments, as on How We Livin, while Nobody Don't Dance No More laments the lack of dancing from the gun-toting types frequenting today's club scene. He's not shy about taking samples from the least obvious sources, either. I Don't Know Why mashes up a Kano rap with some manic scratching and Black Sabbath's classic War Pigs. The kid'll go far...
