Il Divo - Il Divo

Picture the scene. Staff at the offices of a certain well-known artist management/production company gather to brainstorm a few ideas. The boss addresses the meeting: "Now, we've done the manufactured boy band, we've done the manufactured girl band. Where else can we go with this concept? Hey, I know, a manufactured act that does opera-lite." Bingo, Il Divo is conceived. In "development" for more than two years, the act comprises four nice looking, nicely turned out young men who hail from the US, Switzerland, France and Spain. They sing heart-rending ballads such as Unbreak My Heart and Feelings, not to mention a Spanish version of My Way, over polished string arrangements. The boys do their stuff competently enough, but without much in the way of warmth or passion. This may be down to the very slick production - Unbreak My Heart was produced by Steve "Boyzone/Westlife" Mac, for example - or simply the fact that the boys are warbling by numbers, like any manufactured musical act does. For those who like their balladeering on the glossy side, the arrival of this latest quartet of "made-its" will be well received, but one doubts the Three Tenors will be shaking in their boots. Oh, and BMG: what do you have against Macs? You can rip CDs just as well on PCs, you know!
