iPod speakers are a plenty nowadays so it takes something a bit different to come along and make you take notice, but that is exactly what the Gear4 Duo does.
As implied by its name, the Duo splits into two parts; the solid back contains a bass bin section, whereas the mid and high range speakers are arranged in a slim detachable front which can be used stand-alone through its rechargeable battery, just right for the garden or playing tunes in the bathroom.
First impressions are that it looks smart and feels solid. The build quality seems good and this unit may just stand the test of time. The speakers are well protected behind a metal grill and the magnetic locking mechanism keeping the front panel on works well, and the fold down iPod dock is reassuringly tight and will keep your iPod nice and snug.
The sound
The sound quality is pretty good with the bass section attached. Considering the price and market it is aimed at it can definitely hold its head up high. The sound is well balanced and has that extra bottom end so lacking in many other small MP3 docks.
Without the bass section, the detachable front panel does feel like it’s lacking a punch, and sounds a bit lost in a big room or from afar. But, at close quarters and for music-on-the-go it is adequate enough.
On the move
Playing is pretty much continuous if you detach it mid-tune. Inside the front speaker panel is a rechargeable lithium battery that will give two solid hours, and a second empty battery slot for another battery, should you wish to buy one.
A remote is included which also has iPod controls which works well once you get used to the buttons.
Conclusion
All in all, the Duo impresses in looks and performance and as a set it does exactly what it sets out to achieve.
